retainers play a vital role in tying the orthodontic process all together at the end if you are someone who is nearing the end of your braces or invisalign treatment you should start looking into what type of retainers you would like to get there are two types of retainers the first one is permanent
retainers permanent retainers consist of a thin metal wire that is glued to the back of your teeth the metal wire stays attached to your teeth permanently in order to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position the second type is removable retainers removable retainers are custom made to fit your teeth removable retainers can either be a wire removable retainer or a clear plastic retainer there are
some cases where it may be necessary for a patient to use both permanent and removable retainers in order to ensure the best outcome for their teeth now let's move on to the pros and cons of both types of retainers first the pros of
permanent retainers they will stay on your teeth permanently no one will see the retainer as it is glued to the back of your teeth and there is no need to remember to wear them as they are glued to the back of your teeth now the cons of
permanent retainers first food can get stuck in between the permanent retainers it is possible for the retainer to break off from your teeth which can be challenging
if you are traveling it is difficult to floss with them on and you need to be careful when eating hard or crunchy foods now the pros of removable retainers you can brush your teeth and floss as normal they will cover all of your teeth
and ensure that they are all kept straight now the cons of removable retainers it is possible for you to lose them they need to be replaced at least once every year you have to wear them every night and they need to be
cleaned on a daily basis with regards to aftercare be sure to visit your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned especially if you are wearing permanent retainers in order to prevent food buildup if you have removable retainers be sure to have them replaced regularly your orthodontist will
